A pleasant tingle spread through my core at the thought. I imagined Rayne's fangs piercing my own neck again, were we already bound? The prospect was terrifying, thrilling, irresistible.

"Rayne," I whispered, my voice barely audible over the hauntingly beautiful music that filled the ballroom, "I... I still don't understand."

"Understand what, Bella?" He asked, his piercing blue eyes locked onto mine, a hint of concern etched in his otherwise impassive face.

"About the humans here. How can they be with vampires? Aren't they afraid?"

"Ah, I see." Rayne's lips curved into a knowing smile as he guided me through the crowd, our bodies swaying gracefully to the music. The scent of the blood-red wine wafting from nearby tables only served to heighten my senses. "You see, Bella, many humans are aware of our existence, and some even choose to become mated to us."

"Really?" I couldn't help but feel incredulous at the revelation. The idea of willingly being with a vampire seemed so foreign to me, yet here were these people, seemingly living their lives without a care in the world.

"Look around you, Bella." Rayne gestured to the couples on the dance floor. His touch was electrifying, sending shivers down my spine as our fingers intertwined. "Over there, the woman with the raven hair is mated to the man twirling her around. They've been together for decades."

"And there, the gentleman with the silver pocket watch – his mate is the enchanting lady in the lavender gown. They've been inseparable since they met."

"Wow," I breathed, my heart swelling with a mix of wonder and envy. "But how? What makes them so special?"

"Born vampires," Rayne murmured, leaning in closer until his breath tickled the shell of my ear. "We're different from turned vampires. We're born with the traits of our kind but without the need to feed on human blood as our sole source of sustenance."

"Born... vampires?" I repeated, my body trembling at the intimate proximity of his words, their implications sinking in.

"Yes, we are born just like you, little human," he confirmed, his gaze never leaving mine. "It's true that we still crave the taste of human blood, but it is not the only thing that can sustain us. Born vampires are gifted with unique abilities," he murmured, his voice sending shivers down my spine. "Our senses are heightened beyond those of the turned or even humans – we can hear a heartbeat from across the room, see in complete darkness, and taste the subtlest of flavors."

"Is that why you love rare books so much?" I asked, my curiosity piqued by the thought of experiencing the world through such different eyes.

"Perhaps," he conceded, a wicked grin playing at the corners of his mouth. "But there is more to it than that. We also possess incredible strength and speed, making us formidable predators. And our longevity... we stop aging around 30 and we are all but immortal, able to live for centuries as long as we aren't met with a serious injury."

"Centuries?" I gasped, struggling to comprehend the full weight of his words.
